| 2 | 8888.0096.0000.00 | documents | Lumber Industry Documents:BackgroundThe mate | Lumber Industry Documents:BackgroundThe material in this collection was acquired by purchase from various sources. It consists of two receipts, a time-keeper's book, a book listing lumber sales and shipments, a ledger of 304 pages, and a sheet found in the time-keepers book listing expenses for trips.Scope and ContentThe two receipts are dated 28 September and 30 November 1829 and refer to the receipt on board the sloops Eagle and True Guide of stated quantities of corded oak wood. In both cases the oak wood is for Justes Lowery, apparently of Hall's Landing. The only information about the vessels and Lowery is that contained in the receipts themselves. The location of Hall's Landing is not known. The book listing lumber sales and shipments by K. C. Rice of Craddockville, VA, dates from August 1916 to April 1918, and describes the transactions in detail. Craddockville is located at the head of Craddock Creek, about four miles west northwest of Belle Haven, VA. Most of the lumber, which largely consisted of 35- to 75-foot pilings or "sticks", was shipped by rail, although some was rafted. There are frequent references to Pennsylvania Railroad "car" numbers. Shipments were mostly from such Eastern Shore of Virginia points as Birds Nest Station, Nassawadox Station, Eastville Station, and Machipongo Station. Destinations included Newark and Harrison, NJ, Boston, MA, Buffalo, NY, and Mahanoy City, PA. Some of the "sticks" were sold under contract to the U. S. Government. The time-keeper's book covers the period from April 1910 through October 1910 and November 1912. It lists K. C. and John W. Rice, as well as a number of other employees. It gives the number of days worked per month. Each month is divided into two parts. Although the printed format contains a column for pay "rate per day", no rates are entered, nor is there an entry in the column for total amounts paid. The name K. C. Rice has been entered on the flyleaf at the back of the book. The ledger, which apparently is from the L. J. Houston & Co. of Stockton, MD, covers the period from January 1902 through December 1907. Stockton lies about eleven miles south of Snow Hill, MD, and about three miles north of the Virginia border. The ledger reflects monetary entries for a number of individuals and organizations whose names are shown in an alphabetical index at the front of the volume. In addition, sections of the ledger at pp. 193-209 and 302-304 list weekly rental income for 1909-1910 and1904-1906 respectively. One BoxFolder 1- Two receipts: (1) dated 28 Sept 1829 for eighteen and one half cords of oak wood received on board the sloop True Guide at Hall's Landing by W. | No image URL. | View | ||||
| 3 | 8888.0072.0000.00 | documents | Lester R. Trott Collection:The bulk of the Tro | Lester R. Trott Collection:The bulk of the Trott collection is divided among two categories: advertisements and correspondence relating to the companies that he advertised for while running an ad business in Annapolis in the late 1940s to early 1950s, and articles and internal correspondence for Chesapeake Appreciation, Inc., the group in charge of Chesapeake Appreciation Days (CAD). Trott worked with the CAD in the late 1970s when employed by the state Department of Economic and Community Development. Additional materials in the collection include miscellaneous papers from his stint as an advertising man for The Skipper magazine, papers collected while active with the Annapolis Power Squadron, and one document from his brief career as a yacht broker. Biographical BackgroundMr. Lester R. Trott, (born 1918) was involved throughout his life in several aspects of maritime business and promotion on the Chesapeake Bay. A lifelong resident of Annapolis, Maryland, he is a life charter member of the Annapolis Power Squadron dating back to the early 1940s. Starting in the late 1940s he started his own advertising firm, Lester R. Trott, Advertising, which handled promotion and advertising for local businesses. His principal account was for Chesapeake Vacation Cruise of Annapolis but also included Weems Navigation, Tidewater Cruises [?] (of Ephrata PA), John Trumpy & Sons, and many others, not necessarily maritime. He is also one of the founders of the magazine The Chesapeake Skipper (later The Skipper), the first yachting magazine on the Chesapeake (first issue July 1947). After closing his business he joined the staff, working as production manager from December 1951 to February 1952 and thereafter in advertising sales with Henry T. Meneely until March 1953. Leaving the magazine he started another business, this time as a yacht broker. At the time there was only one other yacht broker in business in Annapolis - Annapolis Yacht Sales. Among the boats he handled distributionship for was the Little Mariner, a small plywood outboard cruiser made by Mariner Cruiser of Maryland. He closed the brokerage and returned to the magazine in November 1956 as advertising manager, remaining there until July 1961. Thereafter, he worked as a director of special events and the special projects manager in the Maryland Department of Economic and Community Development, Division of Tourist Development. One of the projects he helped promote was the Chesapeake Appreciation Days, strongly represented in this collection. He remained in this capacity until retirement in 1980. The vessel was named a National Historical Landmark in 1994 after having been nominated to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. Built in 1901, she was, at the time of research, one of the 19 surviving, working skipjacks built before 1912. Her unusual design includes a V-bottom construction with fore and aft planking and a rounded chine whereas a more common skipjack design used cross-planking and a hard chine. Her most recent owner still used her for oyster dredging and racing. The recording project included detailed measurements of the vessel and its components resulting in a set of lines drawings consisting of eight pages and numerous photographs of key parts of the vessel and its functions. In addition a full historical report on the vessel was undertaken by two CBMM employees. The final report, identified as HAER No. MD- 117 was completed in 1994. Scope and ContentThe collection includes the final HAER reports for both the Kathryn and her yawl or push boat.SubjectsCannon, Irving F., owner (1945), part owner (1947)Carman, Kathryn Daugherty, William's daughterDaugherty, GL, first owner, builder (1901)Daugherty, James, builderDaugherty, William E., first owner (1901)Dize, Russell Herman, part owner (1981), owner (1991)Dodson, J. | 6 | 8888.0047.0000.00 | documents | Joseph Valliant Photo Collection:Note: Contact | This collection begins on CSC 15E2 and is continued on CSC 15E3.Joseph Valliant Photo Collection:Note: Contact Sheet and Negative frame counts only include visible, or reproducible, frames. Blank or otherwise illegible frames were not included in the frame counts.Note: Contact Sheets and Negatives are catalogued according to the folder in which they were housed. Various dates may be indicated on the contact sheets or were written on the old paper negative sleeves in which they were originally housed, but they are recorded here according to the overall folder (i.e. Waterman's Gazette issue) in which they arrived. For example, the October photo folder for Waterman's Gazette (Folder #50 here) contained contact sheets dated 4 September and 9 December 1985 and negatives dated 4 and 9 September as well as 9 December 1985. Obviously, the negatives and contact sheets dated in December 1985 did not appear in the October 1985 issue, but for some reason they were housed in the October folder. | 7 | 8888.0033.0000.00 | documents | Captain Jonathan Horney Papers, c. 1832-1853 | Range, Cir 01/01/1832 - 12/31/1853 | Captain Jonathan Horney Papers, c. 1832-1853 This collection is comprised of business receipts for wheat and corn sold for local farmers by Jonathan Horney, captain of the sloop Jane. The records were found in a shed at the head of Leeds Creek. The museum's collection consists only of photocopies of the originals. Background InformationOne of many small freight-hauling enterprises servicing the Chesapeake Bay, Captain Jonathan Horney transported local grain to Baltimore aboard the sloop Jane. He sold it to merchants there, and brought back goods and cash for the farmers who consigned their grain to him. Little else is known of Horney though his clients included a B. Horney, a John Horney and a T. Horney. Maps show that a B. Horney lived at the head of Leeds Creek in the 1850s and that Joseph Horney lived in the vicinity of Claiborne in the 1870s. Both were apparently farmers. Horney's clients included members of the Benson, Copper, Gibson, Hayward, Johnson, Jefferson, Lloyd, Loundes, Marshall, Skinner, Stevens, Tilghman, Talbott, Winder, and White families.Scope and ContentThe collection is divided into four series as follows:Series 1 Receipts for grain sales to Baltimore merchants, 1832, 1838, 1845, 1847-53, undated.Series 2 Receipts for goods bought from Baltimore merchants, 1837-38, 1847-52, undated.Series 3 Accounts of clients, undatedSeries 4 MiscellaneousThe bulk of the receipts are dated 1838, 1847-8, and 1852. Receipts in the first series of this collection document the amount of grain sold in Baltimore, its price, freight and commission charges, and in some cases, the farmer who was to receive the proceeds of the sale. The second series shows the purchase of food, hardware, and clothing from stores in Baltimore. Captain Horney settled accounts with merchants and purchased goods on his clients' behalf. In the third series there are a few documents which include calculations of Captain Horney's profits and losses on particular shipments, and notes indicating the items he brought from Baltimore for particular customers. The fourth series includes a few miscellaneous items--a receipt for wages paid to Thomas Day and a petition for subscriptions to renovate the local Methodist Episcopal Church, as well as a few indecipherable documents. Note on the copies: Every effort was made to produce the best photocopies possible. Where it appears that corners or edges are missing, it is because they were missing from the originals. In almost all cases the copies are as legible as the originals. | No image URL. | View | |||

| 15 | 8888.0101.0000.00 | papers | Papers of Constance S. Larrabee | The material in this collection was acquired in a donation from Constance Stuart Larrabee. Constance Stuart was born in England in 1914 and sailed with her parents to South Africa in the same year. She reseived her first camera, a Kodak No. 0 Box Brownie, at the age of ten, and was captivated by the medium. She studied photography in London and Munich. In 1944, she was South Africa's first woman war correspondednt serving in WWII. Her mission in Egypt was to document the acitvities of the South African Sixth Armored Division. Although her assignment was only to last six weeks, she turned it into an extended odyssey that took her to the front lines in Italy and Southern France, to areas just liberated from Axis rule, including Rome and Paris, and to war-torn London, where the menace of the V-2 rockets was ever present. Her photographs, stark, realistic, and compelling, proide a unique insight into World War II and its aftermath. Consatnce came to America in 1949 when she married Colonel Sterling Larrabee and moved to Chestertown on the Eastern Shore in 1950. She became an American citizen in 1953. Much of her Eastern Shore life centered at King's Prevention Kennel, where she bred over 600 Norwich and Norfolk terriers. Constance bred and trained not merely pets, but champions. An acknowledged expert on the breed, she co-edited Norwich Terrier USA 1936-1966 for the Norwich Terrier Club, USA. Ever concerned with her puppies' well-being, she permitted adoption only after she had carefully screened the prospective owners.Though very involved in breeding champion terriers, she also understood the importance of being involved with her community. The Chestertown Garden Club, the Humane Society of Kent County, the Chestertown Arts League, the Kent County Arts Council, and Washington College were some of the beneficiaries of her boundless energy and inspiration. In 1955 two of her photographs were selected by Edward Steichen to be included in The Family of Man exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. She has since exhibited internationally and has work in leading museum collections, including the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the National Museum of African Art.[compliled from several sources in the collection by Lynne Phillips]Scope and ContentThe items in this collection are organized by subject.
